Chax: The fix for iChat

I like several features of iChat (video chat, integration, stability), but find it lacks the slickness of Adium. Each time I make the jump to Adium, I find myself coming back to iChat for its core functionality.

One free plugin, however, makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. Chax adds a unified contact list (useful if you use multiple accounts, like both AIM and Google Chat), remembers old messages, adds Growl notifications, options for auto-accepting chats, and automatic resizing of the contact list window, among others.

It’s an odd time to be promoting Chax, as it’s not compatible with Snow Leopard, which will be out in 2 days. However, the author’s Twitter feed offers some hope. In response to a question about a beta version for SL, he states: “Not yet. Hang in there for a bit longer.” It will be worth it.

  1. I've tried out Chax in the past and despite the improvements it makes on iChat, I still find myself going back to Adium. Adium as you said still feels slicker….and the new twitter integration makes it even better. Another feature of Adium that I prefer is the theming capabilities. Nonetheless I look forward to seeing whatever may come ou in the next version of Chax that is Snow Leopard compatible.

….completely unrelated…. in regards to the alert box saying:

“You are using an old version of Internet Explorer. This site may not display correctly. Consider upgrading your browser.”

The message is somewhat annoying when browsing the site. As a web developer I realize the intention to make me upgrade my browser, but unfortunately I have no control over upgrading my company PC from IE7 to IE8. 🙁

  2. Those are all legitimate reasons to prefer Adium. Though I don't use video chat all that much, it's nice to have it there. The main thing that makes me switch from Adium are file transfers not working, though I suppose if everyone else is using it that may not be a factor.

I can see how the alert could get annoying – I've moved it to a non-modal warning message.
